Bayer CropScience Hangzhou Co., Ltd is a joint venture company founded jointly by Bayer CropScience SA (65%), Bayer (China) Ltd. (10%), and Hangzhou Holding Industrial Assets Company (formerly Hangzhou General Pesticides Plant) (25%) as a Chinese partner with an investment of US $ 54.42 million, or registered capital of US $ 18.5 million.
The company is situated in Hangzhou Economic & Technological Development Zone with a total area of 83235 square meters, in which 21667 square meters or 32.5 per cent of the area is covered by greenery, and construction area is 39506 square meters. Main constructions include Formulation & Packaging workshop, Synthesis workshop, Maintenance, Warehouse, and Administration Building.
Today BCSH has a workforce of up to over 200 employees, located mostly in HETZ where is the production facility and General Headquarter. This workforce is expected to increase with new project investments planned for the next 2-3 years: Hangzhou manufacturing base will indeed become an industrial platform to meet not only the needs of Chinese agriculture, but also of all other countries outside China. 
BCS has always been strongly committed to the Chinese market, introducing its new products as early as possible, making the decision to invest in Hangzhou at a very early stage of Regent development, accepting also to transfer locally all technology and know-how needed for this modern chemistry. This move, first initiated by Rhone-Poulenc, was fully endorsed by its successors Aventis and then Bayer.
In order to enlarge the business opportunities and better meet the demand from farmers for more effective and innovative products, we had applied for and obtained a business scope extension in 2003. We are therefore now preparing to significantly increase the JV product range, from 2004 onwards. 
By the end of 2003, the JV had started exporting Fipronil to its main shareholder BCS, for an amount exceeding US $ 11 M. This is in line with the commitment made earlier by the predecessors of Bayer, and reinforce the determination of the management to promote this industrial site as one of the key actors of the worldwide Industrial strategy of Bayer CropScience.
